March 5th, 2009 No comments

ASPP DC/South chapter hosted its first meeting of 2009 at Busboys and Poets in downtown Washington DC on Thursday. Works by four visual journalists were also showcased during the informal gathering, geared as a platform for networking, and meeting fellow members across the region.

The works presented during the evening were by -

Robb Hill

Robb presented his project “HomeLand”, photo documentation on the rural area of Indiana where he grew up. It has been slowly disappearing because of suburban growth and will be disappearing faster because of a new bridge of the Ohio River and connecting highway will be built less than half a mile from the 170 year-old farm house Robb grew up in. Robb has been returning to Indiana to working on this project as often as he can for the last three years.

Pouya Dianat

Pouya presented his multimedia project – “MLK: 40 Years Later”

A look back to April 4, 1968. The thoughts, words and recollections of King’s closest friends, colleagues and family 40 years after the civil rights leader was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel.

Larry Levin

Larry showed his documentary film about Depression Era photography. Roy Emerson Stryker was recruited by the U.S. Government to make a record of the successes of a Depression Era federal agency. As the Depression worsened dramatic and hard-hitting evidence was needed to convince legislators and the public that help was needed. Photography was the means to prove what exactly was going on. Not a photographer himself, Stryker enlisted an energetic and passionate group of photographers who traveled across America documenting the economic tragedy.

Stryker’s America provides an insight on how this photo documentation project evolved and how Roy Stryker single handedly conceived and nurtured the mission.

Henrik De Gyor

Henrik explained the nuts and bolts of how photo editors can track what photos they have on file, what can be used, their licenses and expiration’s. Aided with a PowerPoint presentation Henrik, who is the DAM Manager at K12, detalied how he maintains the archive, and helps media editors track assets on a daily basis and orders them for lesson production.
