Marnie Briggs

I always tell people that my career was not planned. One thing led to another, I was in the right place at the right time, I knew helpful people, especially in ASPP, and I ended up with one wonderful job after another. After getting my degree in Art History, my first job was in the Smithsonian Anthropology Department, where I started out washing bones! After a brief stint in the Illustrations Library at the National Geographic and then grad school in Archeology, I returned to the SI Anthro Department, where I worked on a project creating 35mm slide sets (this was before PowerPoint!) about Native American history. When Time-Life Books was moving to Alexandria from New York, I was fortunate to be hired as a Picture Researcher (a friend who worked for them in NY gave me a heads up), and I stayed with Time-Life for 24 years, becoming a Picture Editor and then Manager of the Photography Department before the Book Division closed its doors forever. Afterwards, while freelancing, I photo edited a Smithsonian book (thanks to an ASPP friend recommending me), collected images for a Smithsonian exhibit, and helped several photographers edit and organize their photos. Eight years ago, thanks to a job tip from another ASPP friend, I began working as a Multimedia Researcher at the National Science Foundation (www.nsf.gov) as a government contractor and am still there. From 2000 to 2002 I served as President of the DC/South Chapter of ASPP and have been a member of ASPP for many years.
